MANHASSET, N.Y. Troubled Japanese consumer electronics and display company Pioneer Corp. is seeking ties with rival plasma display suppliers Hitachi and Matsushita Electric Industries Co. Ltd, according to a Displaybank report quoting Japanese news source The Mainichi Shimbun.
Pioneer has been unprofitable for several years, and last December announced a drastic reform program slashing PDP production as well as closing an OLED joint manufacturing venture, resulting in the layoff of 600 workers.
The Displaybank report noted that with global demand for PDPs increasing, Pioneer is likely to seek joint production with its display rivals to spread out its financial risk, rather than halting PDP production entirely.
Consolidation continues to shrink the plasma display market. Matsushita took over Mitsubishi's PDP business at the end of 2005, while Hitachi acquired PDP joint venture Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited (FHP) last May.
