The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, Arlington, Va., is expected to vote on an addition to the DDR400 SDRAM standard that would adapt the memory chip for use in servers.
At present the DDR400 specification for PC main memory devices does not have ECC (error correction coding) capability, which limits the appeal of the new higher speed chip in server applications, according to vendors.
JEDEC sources said gerber specifications have already been developed for DDR400 modules with ECC features. Once approved, many DRAM and module makers are expected to introduce new DDR400 versions for the server market.
ServerWorks, Santa Clara, Calif., a major chipset supplier, has already disclosed that it will support DDR400 memory.
