LONDON — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has signed up to use 3-D visual technology from RealD Inc. (Beverly Hills, Calif.) in its 3-D televisions.

RealD has a portfolio of liquid crystal shutter based 3-D viewing technologies for use in cinema, professional and home viewing environments. Samsung said it will support the proprietary stereoscopic RealD Format. The two companies have also agreed to work together on active eyewear and passive display technology.

The RealD Format is a version of a side-by-side 3-D format that uses filters and other technology that multiplexes a left eye and right eye 3-D image stream into a single channel for delivery of high-definition 3-D content using today's HD infrastructure to any 3D-enabled display type.

"This partnership pairs world leaders in consumer electronics and 3-D technology and will assure that people can enjoy all the 3-D content being released in crystal clear 3-D on 'RealD ready' Samsung TVs," said Michael Lewis, chairman and CEO of RealD, in a statement.

"Our collaboration with RealD is helping bring a new dimension of TV entertainment to consumer households around the world," said Dongho Shin, senior vice president of Samsung's visual display division, in the same statement.
