'Skiff' e-reader uses LG's flexible backplane
PORTLAND, Ore. — A durable, flexible e-reader called the Skiff Reader was unveiled Wednesday (Jan. 6) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES, Las Vegas).
Skiff LLC, a subsidiary of publisher Hearst, will offer the newspaper and magazine content from its 15 daily and 38 weekly newspapers on the Skiff Reader. The e-reader uses the same E-Ink display as most of the other e-readers, but is being promoted as more durable, flexible based on a design by LG Display, which used stainless steel foil instead of glass to support the E-Ink display. The approach made the reader thinner, lighter and more flexible. Sprint will provide 3G wirless connectivity for the Skiff, automatically loading the latest edition of Hearst's publications each day. Wi-Fi connectivity will be used to upload books. The Skiff Reader measures 1/4-inch thick. The large display measures 11.5 inches, with a resolution of 1,200 by 1,600 pixels. The touchscreen allows users to navigate and annotate newspapers, magazines, books and other digital content as PDFs.
